Retreat I (7-9 June 2024)

Our first retreat was held the weekend of 7–9 June 2024 at beautiful Stenan Majat Ky in Äkäslompolo, Finland. The cohort included 13 artists, writers, and researchers from Finland, Portugal, and the United States. Francis Joy led workshops on working with forest sentience through meditation and visualization while John Ryan facilitated a session on poetry, memory, and trees. On Saturday night, Evgenia Emets showed her new film Rewilding Time at nearby Navetta Galleria. On Sunday morning, Satu Kalliokuusi presented an engaging workshop on making a natural pigment from lingonberry leaves collected from the Stenan Majat Ky property. Despite the hoards of spring mosquitoes, the weekend went smoothly and participants were able to focus their creative expressions on the sentience of the surrounding forest.
